4 Steps Nonprofits Can Take to Establish a Lasting Business ...

A guest post from our friends at Software Advice:

By Ashley Halligan, an analyst at?Software Advice

Cause marketing relationships between nonprofit organizations (NPOs) and for-profit businesses (FPBs) have produced mutually beneficial synergies time and time again. The benefits of establishing lasting relationships between NPOs and FPBs can be significant?to both parties.

  • The nonprofit can advance its mission through association and sponsorship by a recognized business, without investing its own limited resources.
  • The business can raise brand awareness, demonstrate social responsibility, and boost customer interest in its products or services. In fact, a?2010 Cone Inc. study?cites that 80 percent of Americans are willing to switch brands?of equal quality and nature?if a brand supports a good cause.

But how does a nonprofit begin the search for a lasting relationship with a business? I spoke with several industry experts?from both NPOs and FPBs?to determine what steps a nonprofit organization should take to begin and ultimately achieve an enduring cause marketing relationship.

1) Assess Your Goals ??Bruce Burtch, author of ?Glowing Your Business,? asks, ?Is the organization building a new facility, trying to add a new service, hosting an exhibition or an event, or simply trying to raise money for their organization??

2) Develop a Shortlist of Potential Business Partners ??Burtch says, ?Search for organizations aligned with the mission and philosophy of the nonprofit.? As an example, he suggests, ?If you are trying to build a homeless shelter, look for construction companies, architects, etc.?

3) Begin Some Conversations ??Catherine Chapman, CFRE at?Fullanthropy, says,??Clearly spell out how they will benefit from working with you. Be creative. Placing a banner ad on your event?s program or on your website is a meaningless ?benefit.? If you present it as a benefit, you?ll lose credibility with the prospective company.?

4) Initiatie and Nurture the Relationship ? Communicate openly and constantly. Demonstrate that there is an ROI.?Chapman says, ?Track as many benefits to the company you can?so you can prove a strong ROI.?

How has your company or organization developed successful cause marketing campaigns? Share your experiences and suggestions below. Meanwhile, read the full story?here.

Ken Marino preps 'Burning Love' seasons 2 & 3: which comedic heavyweights will cameo?

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Yahoo and Paramount are bringing back Ken Marino's satirical web series "Burning Love" for two more seasons, the companies announced on Thursday.

In the first season, Marino spoofed "The Bachelor," starring as a thick-headed, single man choosing between demented beauties played by the likes of Malin Akerman and Kristen Bell.

Marino and Erica Oyama, his wife and writing partner, have already written scripts for the next two seasons, which Marino will direct in 18 days once they finished casting.

The second season will parody "The Bachelorette," starring June Diane Raphael as a woman searching for the perfect man. The third will parody "Bachelor Pad," bringing back rejects from season one and two.

"We had such a good time doing the first season," Marino told TheWrap. "In the back of our heads we knew what the trilogy was."

The biggest question for those who watched the first season is which comedic heavyweights will make a cameo.

Produced by Abominable Pictures and Ben Stiller's Red Hour Digital, the first season of the show featured Stiller, Jennifer Aniston, Akerman, Bell, Michael Ian Black and many others.

Marino was hesitant to reveal much about the casting at this point, though he did say that "Children's Hospital" co-stars Rob Corddry and Rob Huebel would make an appearance.

"The show's not; that's the biggest obstacle -- getting so many fun talented people to agree to work for nothing," Marino said.

Like more and more actors, particularly comedians, Marino must now balance web series with TV and film projects. He recently wrapped "Milo," a film being produced by Mark and Jay Duplass. After he finishes "Burning Love," he will move onto the next season of "Children's Hospital" while also pitching new TV shows with Oyama.

What's the best down payment on a home? - The Help Desk ...

My wife and I are contemplating home purchases, and we're trying to determine the best course of down payment: Ten percent down and pay private mortgage insurance? Twenty percent down with the help of a 10% family loan? (And would that affect our mortgage?) Or 10% borrowed from a 401(k) to make it 20% down? Which one costs us the least in the end? ? Mike, New York City

There are pros and cons to all of these options, but the best choice is probably a family loan or gift that will boost you to a 20% down payment. You'll avoid private mortgage insurance, which is an added fee you pay when you borrow more than 80% of a home's value. "PMI is more expensive now than it has historically been, and it's difficult to have it lifted," says Gloria Shulman, a mortgage broker in Beverly Hills and founder of Centek Capital Group. In order to have PMI removed from your mortgage, you have to pay down your loan to 78% of your home's value, as judged by an appraisal, which isn't always so easy.

A gift is better than a loan because a family loan will be counted against you in terms of debt load, which may make it more difficult to qualify for your mortgage. If it's a gift, it doesn't. All gifts must be documented, by the way. "You have to show the source of the gift," Shulman says. "For example, your parents' accounts."

Of course, if it's a loan, it also has to be on the books, with a term of at least five years and a payment schedule. Your family member must also charge a minimum amount of interest to keep it from being a gift, according to the IRS. Currently, that rate is pretty low, though. As of November, it was 0.89% annually for a loan with a term of up to nine years. (For the full current rate schedule, go to?http://apps.irs.gov/app/picklist/list/federalRates.html.)

A 401(k) loan is a trickier source. First, you have to make sure it's possible; not all 401(k) accounts allow it. Second, you can typically borrow up to $50,000, but if you lose your job before you've paid it off, you'll owe the full balance back within 30 to 90 days. If you can't come up with the cash, it will be considered a withdrawal, with all the taxes and penalties that come with it.

Eagles Must Keep Rising Up Against the Elite: A Fan's Outlook - Yahoo! Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles have a very tough task ahead on Oct. 28. Eagles fans like myself are already worrying about a potential free fall, and facing the 6-0 Atlanta Falcons doesn't stand to make it any better. However, although Philadelphia has struggled a lot this year, it tends to do better against elite competition.

The Eagles have played down to their opponents for much of the season, as they struggle to beat teams they should win over more easily. But when they have taken on tougher competition, like the Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants, they have actually risen to the occasion.

The Ravens and Giants have been the Eagles' two best opponents this year, and they've beaten them both - regardless of the tight, sloppy circumstances. But while Philadelphia has done pretty well in facing these Super Bowl contenders, taking on less scary opponents has been a tougher task.

The Eagles have struggled to beat the now 1-6 Cleveland Browns, lost to the now 2-4 Detroit Lions and were slaughtered by the now slumping Arizona Cardinals. And while they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers at the last second on Oct. 7, the Steelers haven't been at their usual elite level yet. So technically, that was another blown chance against a less than stellar adversary.

When the Eagles take on teams equal to or inferior to them, things don't go very smoothly. However, they have overachieved in beating two superior teams already. Still, the Ravens were far more elite back on Sept. 16 than they are now, considering all their recent injuries, while the Giants have become elite again after losing in Philadelphia on Sept. 30.

But by this pattern, the Eagles should actually do pretty well when facing the Falcons, despite the recent slip-ups and Atlanta's unbeaten record. It doesn't make that much sense to do better with the elite than with far easier opponents - and it makes it more inexcusable that Philadelphia can't take care of business when it's supposed to.

Still, the Eagles can't afford to lay down against anyone, much less the best team in football at the moment. If it takes facing elite adversaries to fire Philadelphia up, that's something the Birds will just have to live with. It's provided some of the only highlights in this season, so the team will take what it can get. And in any case, they won't look alive for much longer if they can't continue this pattern.

Robert Dougherty is a life-long Philadelphia resident who has followed the Eagles since he was eight years old.

S Korea parliamentarians visit islands claimed by Japan

SEOUL - South Korean members of parliament visited a set of remote islands also claimed by Japan on Tuesday, a move likely to further fray ties between two of the most important US allies in Asia.

The tour followed a visit by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak in August, the first by a Korean leader, which prompted Japan to recall its ambassador to Seoul. The row was then overshadowed by a far more acute dispute between Tokyo and Beijing over another island group.

South Korea controls the islands, known as Dokdo in Korean and Takeshima in Japan and equidistant from the mainlands of both countries.

A Korean police official on the islands said the parliamentarians, flying in by helicopters for the third such visit, were briefed on coast guard and other activities as part of an "audit" by parliament's Defence Committee.

Japan issued a formal protest to South Korea's ambassador.

"We've confirmed that the committee members landed on Takeshima," Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura told reporters in Tokyo. "Takeshima is sovereign Japanese territory and such a step is completely unacceptable."

Japan, which ruled Korea for more than three decades last century, has said it will take the issue of the rocky island chain to the International Court of Justice.

But South Korea must first give its assent, a notion it rejects as it has long considered the islands its territory "historically, geographically and by international law".

Experts say there is no indication that the dispute would develop into the kind of diplomatic standoff that has severely damaged ties and trade between Tokyo and Beijing, although it remains a major irritant for the United States.

Strained relations between Seoul and Tokyo over issues related to Japan's colonial rule of Korea scuppered a planned intelligence sharing deal earlier this year.

A Korean study said has said there could be deposits of natural gas near the islands, although no exploratory work has been conducted. REUTERS

Brainwave training boosts network for cognitive control and affects mind-wandering

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? A breakthrough study conducted in Canada has found that training of the well-known brainwave in humans, the alpha rhythm, enhances a brain network responsible for cognitive-control. The training technique, termed neurofeedback, is being considered as a promising new method for restoring brain function in mental disorders. Using several neuroimaging methods, a team of researchers at the Western University and the Lawson Health Research Institute have now uncovered that functional changes within a key brain network occur directly after a 30-minute session of noninvasive, neural-based training. Dysfunction of this cognitive-control network has previously been implicated in a range of brain disorders including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

During neurofeedback, users learn to control their own brain activity with the help of a brain-computer interface. In the simplest case, this consists of a computer that records brainwaves through surface sensors on the scalp, known as an EEG (electroencephalogram). The system is then able to process and simultaneously represent a user's real-time brain activity, displayed from moment-to-moment during a training game on a computer. This setup is known as a neurofeedback loop, because information of brain activity is continually fed-back to a user reflecting their level of control. Such real-time feedback allows users to reproduce distinct brain states under physiologically-normal conditions, promising to be an innovative way to foster brain changes without adverse effects. This is possible because of neuroplasticity, a natural property of the brain that enables it to reorganise after continual training, resulting from adjustments to its own activity.

The new findings firstly help to address a long-standing issue in the field: whether neurofeedback training can trigger any brain changes at all? "The effects we observed were durable enough to be detected with functional MRI up to 30 minutes after a session of neurofeedback which allowed us to compare brain and behavioral measures more closely in time," says Tomas Ros, PhD, lead author of the study, now at University of Geneva. "We were excited to find that increased metabolic coupling within a key cognitive network was reflected in the individual level of brainwave change provoked by neurofeedback. The same measures were found to be tightly correlated with reductions in mind-wandering during an attention task. Amazingly, this would imply that the brain's function may be entrained in a direction that is more attentive and quiet. In other words, our findings speak for the exquisite functional plasticity of the adult brain, whose past activity of little more than 30 minutes ago can condition its future state of processing. This has already been hinted at in meditation research, but we arrived at a direct and explicit demonstration by harnessing a brain-computer interface."

Senior author Dr. Ruth Lanius, a professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Western's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and a scientist with Lawson Health Research Institute adds: "Compared to the lack of significant findings in the control group that received training with false feedback, our findings are unambiguously supportive of a direct and plastic impact of neurofeedback on a central cognitive-control network, suggesting a promising basis for its use to treat cognitive disorders. We hope that our observations will stimulate more research by the science community in order to fully evaluate EEG neurofeedback as a viable and potentially revolutionary approach for the treatment of brain disorders. We are very excited by this promise and anticipate a host of new studies in this direction, particularly for cognitive disorders. Our current work has now moved into the clinical domain to examine whether patients with post-traumatic stress disorder may benefit from this advance." The study was directed by Lanius and Dr. Jean Theberge.

    WHY IT MATTERS: Debt

    The issue:

A sea of red ink is confronting the nation and presidents to come.

The budget deficit ? the shortfall created when the government spends more in a given year than it collects in taxes and fees? topped $1 trillion for the fourth straight time in the budget year that just ended Sept. 30. When there's not enough to pay current bills, the government borrows, mostly by selling interest-bearing Treasury bonds, bills and notes to investors and governments worldwide. It now borrows roughly 31 cents for every dollar it spends.

The national debt refers to the total amount the federal government owes; the deficit is just a one-year slice.

The U.S. has been borrowing since the 1700s, when it needed money to finance the American Revolution. The outstanding debt has since risen to a shade over $16 trillion. While there's plenty of finger-pointing by politicians over who's to blame, deficits historically surge during wars and deep recessions, and the U.S. has had both in the past decade.

    ___

    Where they stand:

President Barack Obama has proposed bringing deficits down by slowing spending gradually, to avoid suddenly tipping the economy back into recession. To help, he would raise taxes on households earning more than $250,000 annually and impose a surcharge of 30 percent on those making more than $1 million.

He acknowledges that his spending on recession-fighting stimulus, tax relief and bailout programs ? much of it started under President George W. Bush ? has contributed to the deficit. But so have bipartisan agreements to extend Bush-era tax cuts, and paying for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Also raising deficits: a drop in tax revenues as more people found themselves out of work and personal and corporate incomes that sagged in the deepest downturn since the Great Depression.

Republican candidate Mitt Romney would lower deficits mostly through deep spending cuts, including some of the reductions proposed by his conservative running mate Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, chairman of the House Budget Committee. But many of the cuts they're pushing would be partially negated by their proposals to lower top tax rates on both corporations and individuals.

    ___

    Why it matters:

Deficits and debt are important because it's never good to spend more than you make for too long. The party out of power always makes deficits a big issue against the one holding the White House ? as Democrats did in 2008 and Republicans are doing now.

Leaders of both parties agree the burden will become unsustainable if borrowing is not reined in while interest obligations keep rising. But huge policy differences exist over how to balance the budget or at least trim deficits to manageable levels ? whether through spending cuts, tax increases or a mix.

Obama and Democrats tend to favor a combination, while Republicans mostly want just spending cuts, although Romney and Ryan say they'd also end some tax deductions and close loopholes ? without specifying which ones.

Congress sets a ceiling on how much the government can borrow. If this debt limit is breached, the government will default on its obligations. This has never happened, but it almost did last summer in a Capitol Hill standoff. As a consequence, the nation's credit rating was downgraded for the first time ever.

The current $16.4 trillion debt limit will be reached late this year or early next. A slew of tax breaks will expire at the same time.

No matter who wins, he'll immediately have his hands full.

Apple announces 13inch MacBook Pro with Retina display 2,560 x 1,600 resolution, Thunderbolt and HDMI starting at $1,699

If the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display was feeling lonely up there on its high-resolution pedestal, it needn't any longer. As expected, Apple just announced a 13-inch version to keep it company. The 2,560 x 1,600 resolution means that 13-inch screen offers a ppi of 232, marginally more than its larger brother's 226. As well as that lovely new display, there's a pair of Thunderbolt ports, and a full-size HDMI port to let you make good use of it with, as well as a pair of USB 3s. While this might not be the primary focus of the day, it will definitely be one of the more hotly anticipated reveals from the company's San Jose event this afternoon. The base model will run you $1,699 and comes with a 2.5GHz i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of flash memory. At the top end you can expect 768GB hard drive, atop a Core i7. And, like last time, to top it all off, all the new goodies come in a slimmer, desire-stoking design -- weighing a whole pound less than the 2011 13-incher and at just 0.75-inches thick, 20 percent thinner. Already full of want? Then don't hang around, as it ships today! In the meantime, keep your retinas locked right here for our hands on.

Some of my work? concerns coaching people who are having to give a speech for the first and possibly only time in their lives and that is at a wedding.? Without exception they are always under confident and lack self belief in their abilities.? Yet they are more likely know more about their subject than anyone else in the room if? you are the father of the Bride for example!

My advice to anyone speaking for the first time or speaking in a different environment from their norm is to remember that they were trusted to speak well and they wouldn?t have been asked otherwise.

Realise too that no one really likes the thought of presenting. Some of the best, most well known speakers and actors have confessed to this. So, when you look out at your audience, know that you?re always in good company. Looking confident is 90% of the art of presenting.? and it helps your audience relax and enjoy.

Confidence can be achieved by being prepared; by rehearsing so you feel comfortable with your material and by having identified beforehand your instant solution for de-stressing.? A favourite quote that helps me is ?If you think you can, you can.?? Well worth keeping in mind.

And if you are not sure how to put a speech together which you can deliver with pride then sign up for our three seminars covering Planning your speech, Putting it together and Delivering your speech.? The first teleseminar is 30 October at 3.30pm? contact me if you would like to know more or want to join in.

Do you enjoy presenting?? Please share your thoughts and experiences here.? I?d love to hear from you.

    University: Cornell, 2010

    Business Ninja at Zipscene, LLC.
    Cincinnati, OH

    ?

What initially attracted you to Venture for America?

The name. It sounded like Teach for America so I thought it was legitimate. That was the hook. What really got me fired up was the application. The questions asked were the same intrinsic questions that I?ve been asking myself after graduation. It challenged the status quo and after completing the application, I knew I was in the right place with the right people.

What is the best part of being a VFA fellow?

Being able to meet (and sometimes live) with other people. It?s really hard to get to know someone of high caliber at a bar or some networking event. So far I?ve bonded with fifty smart and cool people. You can?t get that from joining a company. You can meet people and network with them. But bonding requires time, culture, and energy. That?s what VFA provides.

    What does Zipscene, LLC. do?

Zipscene, LLC. makes and maintains websites and promotions for companies in the restaurant industry. Our clients include Macaroni Grill, Boston Market, CPK, Bob Evans, Steak and Shake, and many more!

What do you do on a typical day at work?

I do two things: project management and business consulting. I design and execute processes to maximize efficiency and expedite product development (I also speak in business lingo). On the business consulting side, I gather data and extract information so that the management team can make sound decisions during meetings.

What?s your favorite thing about Cincinnati?:

Cincy (aka ?Natti) offers growth. The presence of Proctor & Gamble, Macy?s, Kroger, and Toyota provides essential potential and if you want to open the flood gate and ride the wave, this is where you want to be. Alternatively, you can go to established cities and compete for bits of marketshare, but I prefer the former.

What do you hope to accomplish in your time with VFA?

Get to know as many people as possible. Ultimately I hope to become a strong individual with resources to get things done.

Linda the Bra Lady: On Bra Sizes, Bra Fitting ... - The Lingerie Addict

A couple of weeks ago, Linda Becker (a.k.a. ?Linda the Bra Lady) had an interview on Good Morning America where she said, among other things, said bra brands were guilty of using ?vanity sizing? to make their customers feel like they had smaller backs and larger chests. Unsurprisingly, this point of view caused a lot of ripples in the lingerie community, most of them negative.

I reached out to Linda almost immediately after the piece aired and asked if she?d be willing to do a follow-up interview on The Lingerie Addict. Not only did she strike a nerve worth exploring, I also know how hard it can be to explain any point in a 2 minute soundbite or 140 character tweet.

Though I briefly considered not publishing our interview ( after all, this is ?old news? by internet standards now), I decided to keep it because I believe it pulls together several different conversations that have been happening a lot in lingerie blogosphere lately, especially among full-bust bloggers. Namely, it brings up the stigma attached to large breasts, bra sizing information/misinformation, the war on plus four, inconsistent sizing between brands, vanity sizing, and who gets to call themselves a bra expert. The vanity sizing issue in particular stuck out to me because it illuminated how much emotion is attached to those numbers inside the tag. I was also very interested on what some of my readers (especially readers who?ve been wearing bras for longer than I have) had to say regarding their personal experiences with any changes in bra sizing.

As for me, my position on bras and bra sizing hasn?t changed. I don?t believe every woman has to wear a bra; no matter your size, it?s an individual choice. I don?t subscribe to any one, true method of bra fitting because every woman?s body is different and there is no formula that will work for 100% of women, 100% of the time. And I don?t unreservedly recommend visiting a bra boutique to get fitted. Aside from the fact that it?s not a realistic option for every woman, I also know from personal experience that professional bra fitters don?t get it right all of the time.

Instead, my perspective is the same as it?s ever been. Learn the 3 ways to tell if your bra is fitting correctly. Calculators, bra fitters, trial-and-error?whatever you choose, the most important thing is to get familiar with how a properly fitting bra feels on your body. Because once you know that, it doesn?t matter what the number on the tag reads, what bra calculator you use, what boutique you visit, or what an expert says?you will always know what fits.

Just in case you?re new to this story, here?s a timeline of everything that?s happened so far:

And now on to my interview with Linda. As always, I?d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

    1) Hi Linda! Thanks so much for agreeing to do a follow-up interview here on The Lingerie Addict. I appreciate you sparing some time for me and my readers. I know you?re a busy lady, so let?s jump right into it. After your interview on Good Morning America last week, several bloggers took offense to your use of the phrase ?vanity sizing.? I know how hard it is to convey a point in a 2 minute news clip (or a 140 character soundbite), so why don?t you tell us more about what you meant by that ? both for people who are familiar with the news piece and who haven?t seen it.

About 10 years ago, as I was fitting women day in and day out, I started noticing that a few bras were fitting looser in the back than before. As time went on, I continued to see the trend. A woman who would fit perfectly into a 36 band bra suddenly needed a 32 to get the same fit. In fact, this happened to me! When I moved to New York about eight years ago, I fit into a 36D perfectly. But since bra sizes have changed, I now fit into a 32G in the same brand? and (I?m not afraid to say it) I weigh about ten pounds more now! I?m using the same ?good fit criteria? and brands as before. Bra sizes just changed. I think companies did it so that women could feel like they suddenly have a smaller back. It?s the same with clothing!

Vanity sizing or not, bra sizes changed. But let?s be real. I think it?s naive to think that vanity sizing only exists in clothing and not in bras. I?m also not the first to mention this, as this NY Times article pointed out: ?Women Are Shocked by Their New Bra Size.?

    2) I know for a fact that several people were bothered by the headline, ?Bra Sizes are a Scam!? I didn?t watch the live newsclip, but did you ever actually say scam? If so, why that particular word? And, if not, how do you feel about that word being used to describe your view on vanity sizing?

Scam was not my word. Sorry to disappoint! I think the media chose that word to amp up the ?gasp? factor. It?s a bit negative, but I don?t really mind it. It makes women take notice. And what I really want to do is help these women out. Those that have been wearing bras for more than 10 years now deserve to know that sizes have changed, that it?s not just their imagination. I don?t think that announcing that bras sizes have changed is terrible, a ?scam?, or ?calling out? vendors. Industry standards change. It happens. I just think women deserve to know about it. What?s most important to me is helping women find the best fitting bra ? that?s what I?ve been doing since I started more than 25 years ago!

    3) Now I haven?t worn a bra for the last 10 years, so I can?t personally speak to if my size has changed lately, but how did you arrive at the conclusion that bras are vanity sized now? Did you compare any bras from the past to bras today? Did you reach out to any lingerie companies? Or is this based on your experience as a bra fitter? And if it based on your personal experience, how would you respond to claims that that?s not a valid way of measuring changes in size?

Thank you for admitting that you haven?t been wearing a bra for more than 10 years. I think a lot of the people trying to stir the pot do not have the same years of experience that I have. I have been fitting bras for over 25 years. I?m not just the namesake of my company. I actually fit women all day long. I have fit literally thousands and thousands of women in bras. Again, my ?good fit? criteria is pretty strict, and has not changed over the years ? including the importance of a snug bra band. After fitting women every single day for 25 years in the same brands? it was impossible not to notice the difference in sizing.

My response to the claims from other fitters saying that experience is not a valid way of measuring changing sizes: really?! I would love to sit down and measure every bra from every company dated from every year for the past ten years? but there?s no need. I?ve been fitting the same bras, the same way, on thousands of women. They?ve changed.

I have been working closely with lingerie and bra manufacturers for years, and they didn?t actually come out and say that their sizes changed to boost sales and egos. It?s my educated guess that bra companies saw the tiny women with full busts on TV and adjusted their bra sizes to help reflect this. Don?t tell me women aren?t vain about their band size. I have women jump for joy when they find out that a 30 or 32 bra fits them better than a 36 or 38. Who doesn?t want to have a slimmer, smaller back?! We?re only human, after all.

    4) Have you heard from any bra brands in reply to your interview on Good Morning America? If so, can you share what they had to say?

No. They know I?m right. Bra companies call me up frequently to discuss the way their new styles are fitting, get feedback etc. They know what?s going on. In the end, it?s my job as a bra fitter to adjust to what?s going on in the industry. Also, I never called out anyone in particular. This was an industry change.

    5) There have been a lot of new lingerie companies on the scene lately. Do you think the vanity sizing issue applies to all brands and all sizes or is concentrated in certain areas like full bust sizing or European bras or high-end brands or something different? Are there any companies in particular that you believe are now using vanity sizes?

Please remember that I can only comment on brands that I?ve been carrying at my stores. Here?s a list. The brands that have been around for many years are the brands I?m talking about. Although a very few have not changed, the vast majority have. New brands just followed the new standard in the industry, which is a bigger band.

Every brand fits differently, and so does every style within a brand. And no, I won?t start naming ?vanity? brands. HA! I don?t intend to place blame on any bra companies here. I just want to enlighten women to the adjustments that the bra world has made to bra sizes.

    6) On a related note, one of the things that comes up a lot around bra sizing is the lack of standardization across brands. And several people have used the GMA piece as an opportunity to reiterate their issues with the plus four size method. Do you think vanity sizing is at all related to either of those things?

Oh, believe me, I wish there was a standardization of bra sizes across the globe, but that?s unlikely to happen. Even if there was a strict set standard that every company followed, different fabrics would fit differently, and each woman?s unique shape would still require a slightly different bra. Until there?s a standard in the shape and size of a woman, I don?t think we can every truly have standard sizing. This is why only a trained fitter is really qualified to fit someone for a bra. But, since not everyone can make it in to a shop, these DIY measuring methods are meant to help them find a place to start and enlighten them to the possibility that they could be a whole new size.

That being said, I?ve supported the War On Plus Four in theory (you and I have tweeted much about this), and I?m glad that women are updating their measuring methods, but there?s also not one standard for measuring either.

For example, my bra fitters go through months of Bra School before they are certified to fit. I used to teach a ?plus 5? method (adding about 5 inches to the underbust measurement) more than ten years ago as a general starting point. When my NYC shop opened about 8 years ago, I started teaching a ?plus 3-5? method. I did this to accommodate some of the changes that bra companies were making to their bra bands. Now, eight years later, I?ve migrated to a ?plus 0 to 3? for certain women. And, my goodness, sometimes my fitters and I even have to subtract inches for women with certain shapes! Some people think that adding four inches to an underbust measurement is never OK for a good bra fit. For most of my customers, this is true. But that?s because I help a lot of very full busted women. Let?s be clear: every bra band needs to be snug to fit properly. But the bigger the bust, the snugger the band needs to be. It?s working harder! A bra size is dependent on the way the bra runs, the material, the brand, and the woman?s size, age and comfort. And there ARE women who need to add more than zero inches to get a good fit.

Good fitters know, and I know, that measuring the underbust and adding inches (or not) is just basic a guideline for a bra size starting point, and that there is no one-method-fits-all way to do it. As fitters, we take into account a million more factors than just this one measurement.

    7) Another conversation that?s coming up a lot now is how bra sizes are getting bigger. Several newspapers in the UK just published a piece saying the average British woman?s bra size has gone up from a 34B to a 34DD. Do you think that?s because of vanity sizing or are women?s breasts actually getting larger? Or are the two things even related at all?

I think both things could be happening. For one (and remember, I live in the USA where the average dress size has also gone up), breasts are getting bigger, and girls are getting breasts at a younger age. I?m not a doctor, so I won?t even try to tell you why (though I have several opinions on the matter), but it is happening. Also, I think larger cup sizes are more popular because back sizes fit larger. For a woman who could fit perfectly into a 36D ten years ago, she would now need a 32DDD/F just to get the same cup size in the new back size. I think the vanity sizing was really based more on the notion of a slimmer back and the fuller cup size is a result of that.

I don?t think bra companies thought about what this would do to women who already had small bands and full busts. Suddenly, someone who was a 34DD 10 years ago would now need about a 30G or H. I?m very happy that these D+ sizes exist ? women really needed them before, and they especially need them now. But most women are not used to such high letters. In fact, it?s been a real mission of mine to help women understand that a G cup or up is totally common, now! It?s taken years of ?braducation?, instruction, and care to help women get over the stigma of D+ bras and just wear what fits and supports them best. These letters and numbers mean something to women and their ego, so they are reluctant to pick out a new size themselves. It takes going to a bra shop like mine and being professionally fit to finally get it. But besides great fit, I want these women to understand that bra sizes are different now, and not to feel strange picking out a brand new size.

    8) Now that you?ve had a little time since the interview, how are you feeling about it? Anything you wish you could have said differently? Would you say the same thing again? Have you had a spike in visitors to the store? Tell us the fall-out?good and bad!

    No regrets!

Of course I wish there was more time in the interview to explain all of the factors that go in to a good fit, or what criteria would cause a woman to have to add inches or not to her underbust measurement, etc. But, I?m aware that a short spot on TV is not the place to try to squeeze in all of the Bra School training. They hit some good points about changing sizes, proper care, etc. I do wish they had shown the before and after fittings and the braducation I taught those young women. Phew! One woman went from a 40DD to a 30K!

Sure we?ve had a few more visits to our online shop and store, but I?m happier to help spread the word about the benefits of a good bra. It?s always nice to have a new outlet to get the word out.

I was a bit surprised about the backlash and misunderstanding from others in the field. I think some people thought that I was saying modern bra sizes aren?t necessary. Not so! I carry those sizes! I think most just don?t have the right frame of reference since they haven?t even been in business for 10 years, which is when things really started changing. Regardless, my stance on proper bra fitting and my passion for helping women has always been very clear, and they should have known that. Regardless of what these other experts think, it?s more important to me that women realize that bra sizes have changed, rather than why.

I think bra sizes have changed. And I think vanity sizing played a part in why it happened. I said it and I?m not taking it back! Vanity sizing or not, it doesn?t matter to me. It?s more important to me that women wear the bra that fits and supports them best, regardless of the size. And it?s extremely important to me to help women navigate the tricky world of bra fitting.

Thanks again for taking the time to talk with TLA readers, Linda! You?ve given us all a lot to think about.

Legal Disclaimer for certain pages with non-JS fallback | drupal.org

I'm wondering if anyone's implemented a legal disclaimer pop-up/redirect which works in Drupal 7 & if uses JS then provides a fallback for those who have JS turned off?

Closest I've seen is http://drupal.org/project/disclaimer but that needs some further upgrading for 7 & doesn't provide fallback.

I'm thinking rules & legal so for anon users they get redirected to a page of terms first and not using a popup at all - will no doubt not work well on mobile as many popups don't!

Lexus LF-LC Blue debuts at Australian auto show

Lexus has chosen the Australian International Motor Show to unveil the second iteration of its LF-LC concept car. This version is called the LF-LC Blue, and is a followup to the original LF-LC that debuted in Detroit earlier this year. As you might expect, the car is shod in a color called 'Opal Blue,' and is inspired by the semi-precious opal stone found in the Australian Outback.

In addition to the new color, we finally get (some) details on the hybrid powertrain that propels this elegant concept. The Advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive system features an Atkinson-cycle gas engine, combined with an "advanced high-energy battery pack" and an electric motor. According to Lexus, the gas/electric hybrid setup conspires to produce 500 horsepower, though the power split between gas and electric it not specified.

According to Tony Cramb of Lexus Australia, the LF-LC Blue is a vision into the future of sports cars. "Its good looks mask some very exciting design and engineering innovations that will influence Lexus vehicles in the future." Cramb continued, "LF-LC is part concept, part reality: the concept hints at what's to come from Lexus." That is, in fact, the point of a concept car, so Cramb gets points for accuracy.

Lexus also highlights the interior of the LF-LC Blue, including what appears to be the next-generation of Remote Touch. Rather than a joystick controller, like its current incarnation, the 12.3-inch LCD screen is operated by a separate, smaller touch screen control board at the driver's fingertips. The touch screen can pop up and provides the driver with a keyboard. Like the current setup, this new form of Remote Touch controls climate, audio and navigation systems.

Show-goers Down Under can enjoy the LF-LC Blue at the Australian International Motor Show from October 19th to the 28th. To find out about the blue-hued concept, hit the jump to get the press release and click here to check out the complete photo gallery.

Lexus Reveals LF-LC Blue at 2012 Australian International Motor Show

    KEY POINTS:
? Lexus reveals LF-LC Blue concept
? Concept leverages Project LFA with use of carbon fibre
? Debuts next generation Lexus Hybrid Drive with high energy battery pack
    ? New drivetrain develops 372kW
? Unique Opal Blue inspired by precious stone

SYDNEY, Australia, Oct. 18, 2012 ? Australia Lexus has revealed the stunning LF-LC Blue concept at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney. Clad in unique Opal Blue, it is the second version of the LF-LC, first debuted at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year.

The all-new Opal Blue exterior is inspired by the lustrous base colour found in the naturally occurring semi-precious opal stone of outback Australia.

Beneath the blue skin LF-LC combines advanced technologies and materials with organic design, giving an insight into what the future of sports cars may hold. Central to the concept is a suite of advanced materials and technologies, including lightweight carbon fibre and the next generation of Lexus' industry-leading hybrid powertrain.

New to LF-LC and derived from project LFA, LF-LC leverages Lexus' extensive in-house experience in marrying carbon fibre and aluminium alloy materials to achieve a light body mass. The result is an extremely taut body that responds quickly and crisply to driver inputs ? providing the perfect platform for the next-generation Lexus Hybrid Drive system.

Dubbed Advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive, the system features a powerful and efficient Atkinson cycle combustion engine which is mated to an advanced high-energy battery pack. The high-energy battery pack is designed to deliver greater power from a smaller battery than those currently used in Lexus' range of hybrid vehicles. Combined, the LF-LC Blue concept's petrol/electric hybrid powertrain develops 372kW (500hp) ? the most of any Lexus hybrid.

Lexus Australia's Tony Cramb said that LF-LC Blue is a demonstration of what the future may hold for sports cars.

"For decades, Lexus has been synonymous with hybrid drivetrains, superior build quality, comfort and reliability," Cramb said. "With the LF-LC we now reinforce our design and technology credentials. The LF-LC is absolutely stunning. Its good looks mask some very exciting design and engineering innovations that will influence Lexus vehicles in the future.

"LF-LC is part concept, part reality: the concept hints at what's to come from Lexus, while the reality has us actively studying how we can engineer and build a vehicle like this in the future."

Supporting LF-LC's engineering feats is a stunning, technology-laden exterior and interior, clad in a new white and brown interior. Commanding the concept's bold front end are sculpted "L" shaped daytime running lights, vertical fog lamps and a fading dot matrix pattern to convey a sense of movement.

Continuing the sense of motion, LF-LC's side profile is commanded by deeply sculpted air intakes behind the doors. A wrap-around glass roof provides a panoramic view to the outside world while slicing through the air.

The concept car's glass roof features a lightweight, cantilevered pillar with a glass-to-glass junction inspired by modern architecture. LF-LC's dynamic lines are carried through to the rear deck, sculpturally integrating the spindle grille theme to complement the front of the vehicle while creating a unique sense of width. Tail lamps, inspired by a jet aeroplane afterburner, make use of inner lighting to create a remarkable sense of depth.

The rear is also fitted with fog lamps, repeating the fading dot matrix pattern of the front fog lamps. Visually, the integrated tail and fog lamps repeat the "L" shape and lead the viewer's eye down to the powerful Lexus quad exhaust.

The interior of the LF-LC concept contrasts the cool ambience of advanced technology with soft textures and organic shapes to create a driver-focused synergy of form and function. The cockpit expresses a feeling of both openness and security. The driver is enveloped by deeply scooped side panels and a high, curved console. The effect is to focus the driver zone on the controls and on the road.

Based on Lexus' commitment to creating an intuitive driving experience, the
LF-LC incorporates a remote touch-screen device that allows the driver to comfortably operate controls without shifting position or altering their line of sight.

Twin 12.3-inch LCD screens provide information and navigation display. Inputs come from a touch-screen control board piercing the swept centre console. The interface is used to control the audio system, climate controls and navigation, and features a pop-up touch-screen keyboard for more complex entries. Set directly in front of the driver, multi-level meters layer analogue and LCD technologies. The bottom layer displays temperature, fuel and the background for the Eco meter. The middle layer is the tachometer mechanical centre ring. The topmost layer provides indicators for the tachometer, speedometer and Eco meter.

Surfaces throughout the cabin are presented in a combination of smooth leather and suede, with brushed metal trim and wood accents. The lightweight, race-inspired front seats are formed of multiple layers and repeat the interlacing curves that define the cabin interior. The racing-style steering wheel is clad in lightweight carbon fibre and contains integrated controls and start button.

Giant Impact Theory of Lunar Formation Gains More Credibility

A lingering problem in explaining the genesis of the moon appears to have been solved

Earth-moon system from spaceTHEORY OF RELATIVES: Earth and the moon, as seen from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, seem to share a common origin. Image: NASA/JPL-Caltech/University of Arizona

The moon may be a chip off the old block after all.

The most commonly invoked explanation for lunar formation holds that a giant protoplanet, sometimes called Theia, struck the newly formed Earth 4.5 billion years ago and created a cloud of debris that quickly coalesced into the moon. But that hypothesis has suffered from a nagging flaw. Simulations of moon-forming collisions have shown Theia would have been the primary donor of lunar material. But analyses of Apollo moon rocks have shown that the moon seems in many ways a chemical clone of Earth, not Theia.

?The giant impact theory explains many traits of the system?that?s why it?s favored?but this [discrepancy] is a little tricky,? says planetary scientist Robin Canup of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., who played a key role in developing the Theia idea. ?This has been a thorn in the side of the impact theory for some time.?

That thorn may be on its way out. A pair of papers published online October 17 in Science, one by Canup and one by planetary scientists at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif., and Harvard University, demonstrate two different ways that a giant impact could produce a moon with the observed chemical similarities to Earth.

In Canup?s model, the impactor is substantially heftier than the canonical Theia?instead of a Mars-size object colliding with the much larger proto-Earth, her new study proposes a smashup of two comparably sized objects. ?The set of impacts that I identify that can do this involve a much larger impactor than had been considered before,? Canup says. ?The type of impact that I?m advocating here is the collision of two half-Earth-mass objects. They merge to form the Earth.? The moon would then form from the leftover debris, naturally explaining its similarities to Earth.

A different conception, from Matija ?uk of the SETI Institute and Sarah Stewart of Harvard, invokes a small, high-velocity projectile smacking into a fast-spinning proto-Earth. Like an interplanetary mortar, that high-energy impact would fling out a cloud of debris composed primarily of material from Earth. ?The crucial difference is that Earth is spinning faster,? ?uk says. ?If you hit it hard it?s easier for the pieces to fly into space.?

Both studies build on the recent finding by ?uk and Stewart that gravitational interactions with the sun can quickly sap angular momentum from the newborn Earth-moon system. As a result, Earth may have been spinning much faster after lunar formation than had previously been thought plausible?a day on Earth may have lasted only two or three hours immediately after the impact. And the possibility of a fast-spinning Earth opens the door to types of collisions that had not been considered viable before.

Indeed, the true impact of the new studies is not in the specifics of the revised lunar-forming models but in the fact that such revisions now appear plausible, says Erik Asphaug, a planetary scientist at the University of California, Santa Cruz. ?It?s not so much that they?ve come up with a model that works; it?s that they have taken away a constraint that we thought was sacrosanct for the last 20 years,? he says.

?uk, too, foresees the opening of a new chapter in unraveling the story of the moon?s birth. ?This is going to be, I hope, the first of a new batch of papers, rather than the final word,? he says. ?The thing that really surprised me and Sarah is, we didn?t try very hard?this kind of came out pretty much by itself. So that?s promising. We didn?t have to look far and wide for something that worked.?

The only catch is that Theia?s size and the magnitude of its impact, which once seemed to be fairly well understood, are now open to debate. And many more plausible scenarios that can explain the Earth-moon system may now come to the fore. ?That is my worry?I wonder if moon formation may have become an unsolvable problem,? Asphaug says. ?If you can have an Earth that is spinning with pretty much any spin rate, suddenly all bets are off.?

My Life Is Like A Lifetime Movie..No, Really?

So it seems that every time I go over to my grandmothers house she is watching another Lifetime movie. I don’t mind, who doesn’t like to indulge a bit. I especially love holiday season Lifetime movies! I guess I love them so much because I can relate. Not to the holiday ones, unless they are about family dysfunction and chaos. Well, that is how it used to be anyway. Now I have a fairly normal family, one I created with my husband and our beautiful boys. But it wasn’t always so…peaceful. As a child I grew up in a house of utter dysfunction and drama. My mother had a personality disorder, prescription drug addiction and was physically and verbally abusive. My father worked a lot to avoid her and ran from problems. Nights they were together often ended up with the cops at our house.   I moved out at 17, to said grandmothers house and never looked back. Except to check in on my sister, born 14 years after me. (I also have a brother 5 years younger, but he faced different challenges within the family and we were able to remain close.) Fast forward to 2010 when my [...]

Eyelid surgery Helps a Person to Look Younger | ArticlePDQ.com

In medical term drooping eyelid is known as ptosis. It may be present in a person from birth or it may gradually develop later. Generally it is not considered as a serious problem, most of the time it does not affect a person?s vision or health. But in certain and in very rare cases drooping eyelid causes serious and severe effect on a person. It can affect the muscles, nerves or even eye socket.

Eyelid surgery is a cosmetic surgery and it done by people to enhance their appearance. Our skin loses its elasticity as it grows old. This subjects our skin to constant pull. As a result of this excessive skin gets collected in our lower and upper eyelids. This excessive collection of skin on the eyelids causes wrinkles on lower eyelids and at the same time it may cause upper eyelid to have an extra fold of skin which hangs over eyelashes and obstructs our vision. Eyelid surgery helps in removal of bulges caused by the accumulation of fats in our eyelids.

Eyelid operation is generally performed on patients having healthy facial tissues and muscle. As most of the condition required to undergo an eyelid surgery is associated with old age, so mostly the patients are above the age of 30 years. People who are having difficulty in seeing because of drooping eyelid also choose to have this surgery.

An eyelift is a minor surgery. Incisions are made along the natural lines of the eyelids, it is through these lines the skin from underlying tissue are separated and excess fat and muscle is removed. These incisions are then closed with sutures which remain for about a week. Transcutaneous is another technique used for eyelid surgery. In this process incision is made along the eyelash margin and through which excess skin, muscle and fat are removed.

No surgery is fully predictable. Even the best eye surgeons will have patients who suffer from unforeseen complications. Some complications that arise due to eyelid surgery are suture cysts, excess skin removal and even damaged eye sight. Also there are some side effects associated like blurred or double vision for few days after the surgery. The best precaution that can be taken to prevent these complications is choosing a good eye surgeon.

Eyelid surgery can only enhance one?s appearance but it will in no way cause people to treat you any differently than they used to. So it is important to carefully measure your decision before finally undergoing this surgery.
