Four area high school softball programs begin their quest for the state playoffs in earnest today.

With the regular season behind them, Region 7-2A and 7-4A teams start their league tournaments with hopes of at least finishing in the top four, which brings with it a berth in the state tourney.

Northwest Whitfield (23-3), the No. 1-ranked team in the Ga.PrepCountry.com Class 4A coaches poll, is shooting for its third region title in four seasons after winning the 7-4A crown in 2009 and 2011. The Lady Bruins are the No. 1 seed for the region tournament, which begins at 11 a.m. at Heritage Point Park in Dalton, after going 10-0 in Sub-region 7B-4A play this year.

In each of the recent seasons in which it won those region titles, Northwest was among the final eight teams in the state playoffs to earn a trip to Columbus. The Lady Bruins finished in the top four both times, but from this season?s start a state title has been their ultimate hope.

?We have accomplished our first goal, which was getting the No. 1 seed in the tournament, but right now everyone is 0-0,? Lady Bruins coach Jason Brooker said. ?None of the stats matter, none of the rankings matter and none of the records matter at this point. Nothing that you have done matters if you want to take the next step, and I hope we can bring the intensity.

?All of our starters have been there to Columbus and know what it takes to get there, and we just want to make sure that we are taking each step as it comes and not looking ahead for anything.?

Northwest will play at 1 p.m. today, taking on the winner of an 11 a.m. matchup between Gilmer and Southeast Whitfield (10-14). In other 11 a.m. games, Dalton (9-15) takes on Cedartown ? the winner faces Heritage-Catoosa at 1 p.m. ? and Ridgeland faces Pickens, with the winner playing River Ridge at 1 p.m. LaFayette plays Cass in the other 1 p.m. game.

No loser?s bracket games are scheduled today in 7-4A. The double-elimination event will resume Monday at 5 p.m. with a round of loser?s bracket games before the winner?s bracket semifinals and more loser?s bracket games at 7 p.m.

At the Region 7-2A tournament at Alto Park in Rome, Murray County (12-12) will try to build on what has already been a year of major improvement after a winless 2011. The Lady Indians, who are seeded fifth, take on No. 4 seed Armuchee at noon.

If they win, they?ll advance to play the winner of Coosa and top-seeded Calhoun at 4:30 p.m. If they lose, they?ll face the loser of an early matchup between Pepperell and second-seeded Dade County.

?I think our chances are good,? Murray County coach Sandra Johnston said, ?as long as we go out there and play the defense we know how to play, hit the ball the way we know how to hit it.?

Coahulla Creek and North Murray begin play in the Region 5-3A tournament Monday. Christ-ian Heritage did not qualify for the Region 6-A tournament, which also starts Monday.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The newly built Barclays Center is the home of the Brooklyn Nets, and the team's co-owner, Jay-Z, christened the venue Friday night in uniform, sporting a Nets hat and jersey as he rapped two dozen jams onstage in front of thousands.

Jay-Z performed for an excited and rowdy crowd of 18,000, wearing a jersey that featured his last name, Carter, and the number four. It was his first of eight shows at the venue.

As he emerged onstage, a video highlighting some of Brooklyn's historical moments ? like when it was named an official borough of New York City ? played in the background. There were also pictures of famous faces who were born in Brooklyn, from Michael Jordan to Al Capone to Aaliyah to Adam Yauch of Beastie Boys.

Jay-Z opened the show with the hometown anthems "Where I'm From," a song about his upbringing in Brooklyn's Marcy projects complex, and "Brooklyn Go Hard." He followed that with a tribute to one of Brooklyn's icons: the late Notorious B.I.G. He performed some of the rap vet's hit "Juicy" as the crowd joined in.

"Sing loud so he can hear you in heaven," said Jay-Z, who also held a moment of silence for the rapper, who was shot to death in 1997.

Another Brooklynite ? Big Daddy Kane ? made an appearance, performing songs like "Ain't No Half Steppin'" and "Warm It Up, Kane." He received a roaring cheer from the crowd when performing old-school dance moves with two dancers in all white.

Jay-Z said Friday's concert was incomparable to most of his other top-level performances, including the Grammys, Glastonbury or Coachella.

"Nothing feels like tonight," he told the crowd multiple times.

The audience was excited and wild, cheering on Jay-Z as blue laser lights beamed across the venue. A seven-piece band was placed a level above Jay-Z, who paced from left to right while performing jams like "Empire State of Mind," ''I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)," ''Izzo (H.O.V.A.)," ''99 Problems" and many others. Videos played on screens behind and above Jay-Z, while screens for fans in the higher sections ? though not large enough ? showed the rapper's performance on the left and right sides of the stage.

"I want to thank you, Brooklyn, New York City, for making me the man I am today," he said. "Like I said, everybody's from Brooklyn tonight."

A fan in the front section held up Jackie Robinson's Brooklyn Dodgers jersey, immediately grabbing Jay-Z's attention. He asked the fan for it and said: "I promise I'll give it back."

"Brooklyn had their heart broken," he said as he held up the jersey and referred to the Dodgers leaving for Los Angeles after the 1957 baseball season. "We cried for so many years. ...Look how far we've come."

Jay-Z will perform at Barclays through Oct. 6 with the exception of Oct. 2.

You only have to look at the tidal wave of Ultrabooks to know that Intel design specifications can carry a lot of influence with manufacturers. That's why the chip-maker's claims about its latest reference tablet, built around a dual-core Atom Z2760 processor (aka "Clover Trail"), likely give us a broad hint of what to expect from devices like the forthcoming Lenovo Think Pad 2, ASUS Vivo Tab and Samsung ATIV Smart PC.

In particular, Intel has shown us slides claiming that the dual-core 1.8GHz chip with Imagination SGX545 graphics will offer the "best Windows 8 experience" on a tablet with "compatibility and support for traditional apps and peripherals." And if you think that sounds like a subtle jibe at ARM-based tablets running Windows RT -- a version of the OS that doesn't even try to play nice with existing software -- then you could be right. To be fair though, the point of RT is to offer superior portability, and that's why Intel is also keen to emphasize that Clover Trail won't impact too heavily on your freedom of movement. Tablets should come in below 1.5 pounds (680 grams -- similar to the RT spec and much lighter than a Windows 8 Pro tablet) and 8.5mm in thickness, with built-in 3G, 4G and NFC. You shouldn't need to carry a charger either, since a new power management system promises a distinctly un-laptop-like three weeks on standby and a full day of "active use" -- defined as being at least 10 hours.

Windows 8 tablets won't be like Windows 8 Pro machines, however, so don't go expecting USB 3.0, or a guarantee of 1080p visuals (most Clover Trail devices we've seen are 1,366 x 768) or souped-up security -- the Atom Z2760 is very much an evolved Medfield processor, with similar silicon and firmware, rather than a shrunken laptop chip.

Needless to say, what really matters is how well manufacturers adopt this design and what price points they manage to hit. Intel says that at least 20 different Clover Trail tablets are already in the works, and early price tags seem to be around the $799 mark -- a hefty demand for sure, but perhaps one worth paying for those who need full-fledged Windows 8 and true portability at the same time. RT tablets, meanwhile, will have to come in much cheaper than that in order to be worthwhile.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Healthy people's lungs are home to a diverse community of microbes that differs markedly from the bacteria found in the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients. That's the result of new research from Stanford University and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, which has wide implications for treatment of cystic fibrosis and other lung diseases.

"The lung is not a sterile organ," said David Cornfield, MD, an author of the new study, published Sept. 26 in Science Translational Medicine. Although decades of received scientific wisdom said healthy lungs lacked resident microbes, scientists had begun questioning that notion. "This research confirmed a long-held suspicion that a forest of microbes exists in both healthy and diseased lungs," said Cornfield, a pulmonologist at Packard Children's and a professor of pediatrics in pulmonary medicine at the School of Medicine. "More surprising, our data presents a suggestion that the lung flora provides microbial homeostasis that might function to preserve health."

Healthy lungs' microbes have been overlooked in part because past research has focused heavily on lung diseases, Cornfield said. Another flaw in prior studies was a bias toward looking for micro-organisms that could be grown in labs. Many of the types of microbes that the Stanford researchers found in healthy lungs have never been cultured in a laboratory.

In contrast, a large body of research had previously shown chronic microbial colonization in the lungs of people with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease characterized by serious, progressive lung problems and death from respiratory failure. For instance, CF patients are vulnerable to chronic infection with the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which can cause pneumonia.

The new study used sputum samples from 16 CF patients and nine healthy control patients. The scientists also analyzed lung tissue samples from seven patients' explanted lungs, the organs removed when the patients received lung transplants. (Three lung-transplant recipients had CF; four had other lung diseases.) The researchers extracted DNA from the sputum and tissue, and selectively copied genes coding for the 16S ribosomal gene sequences, which are found only in bacteria. The resulting genetic material was measured to determine which phyla, or families, of bacteria it came from and the relative contributions of each bacterial phylum to the total bacterial population in the lungs.

Several differences emerged between CF patients and healthy people's communities of lung bacteria. In general, healthy individuals had more diversity among their lung bacteria. Different bacterial phyla predominated in the two groups: members of the Bacteroidetes and Fusobacteria phyla were much more prominent in healthy individuals, whereas CF patients had a larger percentage of Actinobacteria. Also, healthy people had a larger proportion of bacteria that had never been grown in a lab.

"I think the tendency toward decreased diversity can be metaphorically viewed as the same phenomenon that might happen in a rainforest," Cornfield said. "When the ecosystem of a rainforest is disturbed and one organism predominates, it undermines a carefully constructed balance and causes disturbances in overall ecosystem. I think it's reasonable to assume something similar could happen in the lung microbiome, where pathogenic bacteria may out-compete organisms that may play a salutary, health-affirming role."

The results open many questions for future research. No one has ever tested the idea that certain microbes benefit lung health, for instance. "We may need to consider strategies that allow favorable microbes to exist while eradicating disease-causing species," Cornfield said. "That paradigm, if it's true, would really turn the care of patients with pneumonia and other lower-airway diseases on its head." Future research might test whether CF or pneumonia patients could benefit from doses of probiotic bacteria to their lungs, he said.

In addition, no one is sure how the antibiotics often given to CF patients change the microbes in their lungs.

"The marked differences in composition and diversity of microbial communities from adults with cystic fibrosis and normal controls are intriguing," said Thomas Ferkol, MD, director of allergy, immunology and pulmonary medicine at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. "The question that remains to be answered is whether these differences are directly related to the underlying lung disease or simply a consequence of frequent antibiotic use, which has been shown to change microbiota of the upper airways." Ferkol was not involved in the research.

More questions arise from the fact that bacterial profiles varied within the group of CF patients. CF patients differ widely in their disease progression, even when they have the same disease-causing gene mutations. It is possible that patients' lung function may be linked to the bacteria present in their lungs. The research team now plans to study whether individual patients' bacterial profiles can be used to predict their clinical condition.

Cornfield collaborated with first author Paul Blainey, PhD, previously a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford and now a faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Carlos Milla, MD, an associate professor of pediatrics in pulmonary medicine at Stanford and a pulmonologist at Packard Children's; and senior author Stephen Quake, PhD, professor of bioengineering and of applied physics at Stanford and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Since it can break the tires, you have to be really careful in using it. If you go to bike stores, you will find that lever is sold in a set.

The third tool is a bicycle pump. This is an essential bicycle tool that people must have. The bike pump that you should have is the one that is attachable to your bike. People call this kind of pump as a frame pump. The characteristic of this pump is its light weight. This pump can come in handy during a sudden flat tire during a cycling activity. Using a pump requires practice and an inexperienced person can experience difficulty in doing so.

Other bicycle tools that are needed are a bicycle patch repair kit, which serves as a back up when there is a sudden flat tire; a "Presta" valve adapter that is used to repair a flat tire that your friend may have, which weighs less than the frame pump; and carbon dioxide cartridge inflation that you can use when you do not have times to fix a flat tire yourselves. These tools are really necessary helpful to your bike. So, if you have not had them with you, you should buy them right away.

Furthermore, there are also some regular maintenance bicycle tools. First tool that should be owned is cleaning liquid. This liquid is usually sold with soft cloths. You can use the soft cloths to help you apply the cleaning liquid on your bike. However, you have to be careful not to scratch the surface of your bike. The second maintenance tool is a screwdriver. You need to have, at least, two kinds of screwdriver for your bike, which are flat head and cross-head or Phillips screwdrivers. Next tool that needs to be possessed is a pair of pliers. It is better to have both short and long pliers. The following tool is a wire cutter that you usually can get together with the pliers. A small hammer is complimentary if you need to hit a part of the bike to get it back to its place. Other maintenance tools are plastic tire levers, which are used to peel off the bike tires; a torch to calibrate the disc brakes; a set of wrenches; brush, to clean the various parts of your bike; and a toothbrush for bike parts that are hard to reach with brush.
