The Board Game Family Painting board game pieces - The Board ...

Most family board games come with fantastic playing pieces and items that enhance the game experience. After all, one of the things that makes board games fun to play over digital games are the physical components in the game. Players get to move cool board game pieces and markers around to accomplish their objectives.

We love seeing the production quality of board game components today continue to improve. Board game publishers continue to find great ways to bring a game to life through cool artwork and fun components.

There are also a lot of modern board games that still use simple cubes to represent some part of a board game like population, resources, boulders, viruses, or victory points and such. While we may not fault them completely because the fun of the game surpasses the dullness of the cubes, even putting a basic shape to the item adds to the fun.

For instance, house shapes are very easy to make out of wood and turn a simple cube into something more recognizable. And some games even take houses to the next level and shape them to resemble more stylistic houses like in the game China.

Kingdom Builder board game

Before: The standard Brown settlements

So we were surprised when we bought Kingdom Builder a few months ago and found that one set of houses was left uncolored. They did a great job in using house shapes over simple cubes, but it seemed like they left it undone by having a blue set, and orange set, a black set, and then an uncolored (tan) set. No one wanted to pick that set of houses.

Well, we had to do something about that!

So what we did do with our copy of the Kingdom Builder board game?
We painted that set of houses purple!

Kingdom Builder board game

After: Our new purple settlements

At first we thought a bright red would go well with the blue and orange pieces. But then we found out the expansion (which I?m sure we?ll get sometime down the road) comes with a 5th player set which is red. The next option was yellow ? think of Pandemic with the blue, black, red, and yellow ? since Caleb loves to pick yellow for his playing pieces. Green might be good too, but there? a lot of green spaces on the boards and the houses shouldn?t blend into the board backgrounds.

In the end we decided to go with something less traditional ? purple!
Now that?s a color that will bring a lot more fun to the game than the original tan. A simple change, but fun to do.

Memoir '44 board game

Before: Grey and Green everything

Plenty of things to paint
Last year I also painted some playing pieces from another board game that I love ? Memoir ?44.
In Memoir ?44 the two sides (Allies & Axis) are differentiated by blue/grey vs. green playing pieces. Each side also comes with obstacle pieces of sandbags, barbed wire, and hedgehogs. But in the scenarios, these obstacles are neutral ? either color can be used wherever to represent the obstacle. In our minds having them blue/grey or green made no difference. So why not make them all neutral?

So that?s just what we did.

Memoir '44 board game

After: Better looking obstacles

We took all the obstacle pieces and painted them to better represent sandbags, barbed wires, and hedgehogs. Now they stand out great on the board and help add to the ambiance of the game.

Of course, there?s also a whole world of gamers out there are really get into painting game miniatures. There are also a number of companies that offer services for painting game miniatures because it?s a large enough market.

And with how much our boys have loved playing Descent: Journeys in the Dark 2nd Edition since we got it for Christmas I?ve been tempted to step it up and try painting the miniatures. But that?s a lot of work. Take a look some of the cool Descent miniatures people have painted and posted on BGG.
(P.S. review of Descent coming this week!)

Memoir '44 board game

After: Rusted, worn-down hedgehogs

Once I got started with the Memoir ?44 pieces, I was also tempted to continue on painting the rest of the pieces. But realizing the time commitment to undergo such a task is huge, I quickly set those thoughts aside. It may be fun at some future time (since I enjoy painting), but for now I?ll spend more of my time PLAYING the games with my family instead of at the painting table.

However, if we come across a game that needs a little tweaking to enhance our play experience that?s simple ? like painting some wooden houses ? I?m not afraid to get out the paints.

Have you ever painted any of your game pieces?

Home of 'beautiful women and booze? turns 20

A bartender dances on the bar at a Coyote Ugly in Tampa, Fla. (Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

NEW YORK?Liliana ?Lil? Lovell was just 25 when she walked away from an up-and-coming career on Wall Street to open her bar Coyote Ugly in New York?s East Village in 1993. The bar marks its 20th anniversary this weekend, and Lovell has more than a few stories to tell.

Lovell, who had just graduated with a degree in psychology and communications from New York University, was struggling to live on a $250 weekly salary as an apprentice at an investment bank and had picked up bartending shifts to make ends meet.

Soon, Lovell was earning the equivalent of her weekly salary in tips in a single night working at a grungy dive called The Village Idiot, where the owner was known to drink Guinness by the gallon and pass out by the front door. When a tax issue closed that bar temporarily, Lovell scrounged up her tips and found an investor to help her open her own place in a vacant Italian restaurant directly across the street.

Her business plan at the time was shockingly simple: ?Beautiful women and booze,? Lovell recalled in an interview. ?It seemed like the most obvious way in the world to make money.?

But it was also groundbreaking. As Coyote Ugly prepares to mark its 20th anniversary, it?s easy to forget Lovell?s dingy little honky-tonk?which eventually spawned a Jerry Bruckheimer film, a chain of spin-off nightclubs around the world and, briefly, its own CMT reality show?was once a rarity in the nightlife world.

In those days, even in New York, it was unusual for a bar to be staffed entirely by female bartenders?even more so for one of those bartenders to be the owner and manager of the place.

?It was virtually unheard of for a woman to be bartending. There were very few women on the scene. It was almost impossible to get a job,? Lovell recalls. ?[But] what I found were that women were better sellers. I can get them with practice to be fast, but they were able to chat with the customers and created better sales. But it was considered very odd at the time by most people.?

That impression didn?t last long. Soon, Lovell?s tiny First Avenue joint was attracting big crowds?largely because of the legend of Lovell herself.

Cute and petite with the tenacity of a fearless drill sergeant, Lovell laid down strict rules for what was allowed at her bar.

For one, there was to be no girly drinks?a tough call during the coming of age of Cosmopolitans and other fruity concoctions made popular by ?Sex and the City.?

What was permitted was a jukebox of loud country music, endless shots of Jack Daniels and Patron, and a stream of constant torment aimed at the bar?s male clientele by a staff of scantily clad, gorgeous bartenders?known as Coyotes?who were encouraged to dance on the bar and make the scene as lively as possible.

It?s a business model that Lovell has fiercely perfected and protected. In expanding her business around the world, she has become something of an eternal Coyote guarding a brand that is as much her own identity as anything else.

?She was born to run an empire, with an iron first, a wickedly charismatic smile and a unique vision,? says writer Elizabeth Gilbert, who, before her ?Eat Pray Love? days, worked as a bartender at Coyote Ugly.

?I was shocked at how young she was and how terribly sexy,? Gilbert recalled of her first meeting with Lovell. ?And how commanding she was for somebody who was quite dainty and feminine. ? I think she is one of the powerful people I have ever met. We became friends over time, but I was initially very intimidated by her.?

Gilbert was 23 when she began working as a Coyote and was initially lured through the door by the sound of the blaring jukebox. Back then, Gilbert said, she lived in constant fear of being canned by Lovell, whom she says ?was not shy about firing people who did not satisfy her.?

?I was so afraid of being fired for not making enough money for Coyote Ugly that I used to steal money out of my own tip jar and put it in the cash register, so Lil would think I was attracting more customers than I actually was,? Gilbert said. ?I cannot imagine another boss so formidable that you would embezzle from yourself in order to keep her happy.?

It was an experience Gilbert later chronicled in a 1997 GQ article?a piece that made the bar famous outside New York City and attracted the attention of Bruckheimer, who optioned Gilbert?s article and used it as the basis for the 2000 film ?Coyote Ugly.?

It also made Lovell famous?who then found herself in the position of trying to protect her brand from others eager to replicate the bar?s image and success in other cities.

?I never sought fame or celebrity,? Lovell says. ?I just wanted to be financially successful. I never imagined what this would turn out to be.?

Soon, she took the Coyote Ugly bar national?eventually licensing outposts all over the world, including Las Vegas, New Orleans, Germany and Romania. With profits in revenues and licensing fees at one point exceeding an estimated $20 million a year, Crain?s named Lovell one of its top entrepreneurs under 40 in 2003.

Over the past decade, Lovell admits the business ?hasn?t always been easy.?

Many businesses besides the Coyote Ugly franchise make money off sexy strong-willed bartenders and people dancing on the bar. As a result, some of the Coyote Ugly bars, licensed to independent operators, have closed.

But many have been replaced by outposts in other cities, including three new locations in Russia that opened last year. All told, the company has 21 licensed Coyote Ugly locations all over the world?and Lovell is looking to open a new location in Los Angeles later this year.

?I always saw bartending as a means to an end,? Lovell says. ?But I think it never really hit me how far this thing had gone until I was sitting in the middle of Siberia in one of the bars I had just opened. Only then was I really like, ?Wow.??

Lovell, who now lives in New Orleans with her 13-year-old son, has ceded day-to-day management of the business to others. But she still plays a direct role as president of Ugly Inc., making sure that the bars adhere to the strict style she has laid down.

She admits changing some of those rules over the years. Before the movie, Lovell says, there wasn?t choreographed dancing?but when customers came into her bar looking for the experience they had seen in the film, she put more emphasis on hiring people who could actually move.

?I was like, well, we have to Hollywood it up!? she says.

And she continues to pay close attention to the numbers each bar generates on a daily basis. When new outposts open, Lovell is usually there to help coach the new Coyotes on how to do their jobs.

Over the years, Lovell has rejected criticism of the style of her franchise?which critics, especially women, have derided as everything from a ?flashier Hooters? or a ?PG-13 strip club? because of the way the employees use their sexuality to make money. But Lovell insists that Coyote Ugly should be viewed as a form of ?female empowerment.?

?My brand of feminism is that I am an empowered woman. I have never had to rely on a man to make money for me. And I think sexy is powerful. I think funny is powerful,? Lovell says. ?You combine all of this, and you are powerful as a woman."

AP Interview: Ohio's Kasich on 'trade mission'

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) -- Ohio Gov. John Kasich says his state's economic comeback is generating interest ? and potential new business opportunities ? on the world stage in Switzerland.

The Republican governor told The Associated Press that he was initially reluctant to join other political, business and academic leaders participating in the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. But he decided to go because he realized that "it's like a trade mission."

Kasich said in the interview Friday that most of the 15 CEOs of big companies he has met with in Davos had already heard about Ohio's improved budget and employment picture during the two years he's been governor.

Among the companies he said he had held business discussions with were U.S.-based Dow Chemical Co. and Netherlands-based Royal Philips Electronics.

Weekly Ketchup: J.J. Abrams On Board For Star Wars

This week's Ketchup includes movie development news for directors like Paul Thomas Anderson and David Fincher, sequels for The Best Man and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and the latest about the seventh Star Wars movie.

This Week's Top Story

J.J. ABRAMS' CONQUEST OF EVERY MAJOR FRANCHISE TO CONTINUE WITH STAR WARS EPISODE VII

If you saw monsters like this or this or this, and thought "hey, the director and/or producer of that movie should do Star Wars", you are probably a) alone in that sentiment and b) very happy with this week's news. J.J. Abrams has won some sort of crazy creative lottery by scoring not just the first two Star Trek reboot movies, but now, the distinction of directing Star Wars Episode VII as well. J.J. Abrams had been one of the many directors mentioned in various reports in the last few months, but most thought his Star Trek obligations would preclude him from doing Star Wars as well (and indeed, Abrams himself shot down the notion). The reaction that many probably had to the initial news earlier this week was that they were waiting for confirmation, so, well, here it is. As secretive as J.J. Abrams' work has been with his two Star Trek movies, he's expected to be even more guarded about Star Wars Episode VII. Which may even be part of why he got the job.

Fresh Developments This Week

#1 JOAQUIN PHOENIX TO REUNITE WITH THE MASTER DIRECTOR FOR INHERENT VICE

Besides The Master, the project that director Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia) has been working on for a few years now is an adaptation of the drug-soaked late 1960s detective novel Inherent Vice (written in 2009 by Thomas Pynchon). For a while, Robert Downey, Jr. was loosely attached (or was at least "interested"), but this week, we learned that instead, Joaquin Phoenix is now in talks to play the detective. Inherent Vice is now the film project most considered likely to be PTA's next, which will make it a back-to-back reunion with the star of The Master. In addition to directing, Paul Thomas Anderson also adapted the screenplay from Thomas Pynchon's novel. Oracle heiress Megan Ellison is financing Inherent Vice through her Annapurna Pictures production company, which also recently gave us Lawless, Killing Them Softly, Zero Dark Thirty, as well as The Master.

#2 WARNER BROS CONTINUES ITS GIANT OBSESSION WITH ROBOTECH

It's very easy to see a thorough line among Warner Bros' releases for the next few years, with "giant" as a common theme. It starts with Jack the Giant Slayer, and then continues with the giant monsters and robots of Pacific Rim, and the reboot in 2014 of that original giant monster, Godzilla. This week, the studio hired commercials director Nic Mathieu to potentially make his feature film debut on an adaptation of the classic Japanese anime series Robotech. If Robotech is eventually released as soon as 2015, this could effectively create a back and forth alternation between giant monsters in even years and giant robots in odd years (presuming... a lot, obviously). Robotech (in its various forms) is one of the most famous examples of "mech" science fiction, which basically refers to giant robots controlled by humans. And then they fight.

#3 DAVID FINCHER MAY FIND REESE WITHERSPOON'S GONE GIRL

What often happens with extremely successful directors like David Fincher is that they will have these huge lists of ambitious projects on their slates, but none of them are necessarily ready to go, for various reasons. And then, along comes a completely different movie which does have everything in position, and said famous director signs on, makes that movie his next film instead, and two years later, the world is still waiting for all those other movies we kept hearing about. That scenario may end up being what happens with David Fincher this year, as he is considering directing an adaptation of the Gillian Flynn novel Gone Girl (and not, say, directing Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea anytime this year). Gone Girl, which was adapted for the big screen by Flynn as well, is a recent bestseller about a man who is suspected of murdering his wife following her disappearance on their fifth wedding anniversary. Reese Witherspoon is producing Gone Girl, and may (or may not) also end up starring as the aforementioned missing wife.

#4 THE 60TH MOST POPULAR MOVIE OF 1999 GETS THAT SEQUEL NO ONE THOUGHT OF ASKING FOR: THE BEST MAN 2

Among the top 10 most successful movies of 1999 were several that ended up getting sequels, so natrually it's easier to list the films that didn't (including The Sixth Sense, Tarzan, Big Daddy, and Runaway Bride). You have to keep scrolling down that list for a while until you get to the #60 most popular movie of 1999, which was the African American-centric ensemble comedy The Best Man. And yet, according to an announcement made by Universal Pictures this week, that's the movie that will indeed be getting a sequel, which will be in theaters on November 15, 2013. The Best Man scored a 71% on the RT Tomatometer, and featured a cast that included Taye Diggs, Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, and Harold Perrineau, Jr. Part of the big news here is that the entire cast is returning for the as-yet-untitled sequel in a Christmas-themed reunion story. It all sounds a bit like an African American version of The Big Chill (sans one of them being dead, unless that's what it would have been if one of them had chosen not to sign on for it...?).

#5 CHLOE MORETZ SAYS I WILL STAY TO IF I STAY

What superhero movies were to the mid-2000s, and remakes were to the late 2000s, so, it seems, that girl-friendly YA novel adaptations might be to the mid-early 2010s (to paraphrase Hedwig and the Angry Inch). There's a lot of them coming in 2013, and this story involves one that will probably get released in 2014, if filming does actually start this year. The YA novel in question is If I Stay by Gayle Forman, which tells the story of a 17-year-old girl who has an out-of-body experience following a car accident. A few years ago, If I Stay had both Dakota Fanning and Catherine Hardwicke attached as star and director, but as the movie gets closer to production, there's now a completely different pair attached. Now, it's Chloe Moretz who's attached to star, and R.J. Cutler of ABC's Nashville is in talks to make his narrative feature film debut. Consider this a borderline Fresh/Rotten idea which is basically Fresh based mostly on the RT Tomatometer scores for Chloe Moretz's past films (especially if you just focus on 2008 to 2011).

Rotten Ideas of the Week

#4 THE LATEST JUSTICE LEAGUE RUMOR TELLS US THE LINEUP WE PROBABLY COULD HAVE GUESSED

If you take out the Star Wars news, this was actually a pretty slow week. Rarely would we devote an entire 1/10 of this column to a rumor about which characters may or may not be appearing in Justice League. Perhaps that little tidbit alone could be why this is a borderline Rotten Idea of a story. Anyway, the rumor (which is what this is until it's confirmed) is that the core team of the first Justice League movie will consist of five superheroes, who would be pretty easy to guess just based on the idea of asking the random fan who are the five most famous DC Comics superheroes. The answer would be Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the Flash, which are the five heroes in question. Some articles online this week made the mistake of saying that these were the "founding members" of the Justice League of America, which is only 60% correct. Batman and Superman were not in the team in its first appearance (Aquaman and Martian Manhunter were). Indeed, if you add Aquaman and Martian Manhunter to those five, you get the "Big Seven" lineup that Grant Morrison famously used when he rebooted JLA back in 1997. Aquaman and Martian Manhunter are also the two characters named as being strong contenders to have cameo appearances in Justice League, along with Hawkman. So, basically, Justice League is starting to look like a "sausage fest," which is a little sad considering how many great female members the JLA has had over the years (Black Canary, Hawkgirl, Zatanna, Oracle, Huntress, etc). That's the other half of why this is a (borderline) Rotten Idea... way too many superheroic Y chromosomes.

#3 SONY PICTURES THROWS THE GENRE KITCHEN SINK AT US AND CALLS IT... THE KITCHEN SINK

This movie could've actually ended up as a "Fresh Development" just on the title alone, until one actually thinks about the premise, and considers the likelihood that it probably won't be as clever as it probably thinks it will be. The Kitchen Sink is the name of a young-skewing genre movie from Sony Pictures which is about a human, a vampire, and a zombie who team up to fight off an alien invasion; it's basically a mashup. Mackenzie Davis, Nicholas Braun, and Josh Fadem are in talks for the lead roles, and you'll probably find the IMDb useful in figuring out if you actually know who those people are. This writer just thinks about movies for a living all week, and yeah... I've got nothing.

#2 DWAYNE JOHNSON MAY RETURN TO FAMILY MOVIES WITH TEDDY BEAR

It's great now in 2013 that Dwayne Johnson is back to doing more action movies that are his more obvious strong suit, but it wasn't that long ago (like 12 months ago!) that Johnson was mostly just starring in kids movies. Well, that era may be revisited soon enough, as he has come aboard as producer (and possibly star) on a New Line Cinema family fantasy project tentatively called Teddy Bear. The start of the movie came from a drawing called "Sweet Halloween Dreams" by Alex Panagopoulos which showed a teddy bear standing near a sleeping child, fending off a big monster. And from that, we get the potential impetus for an entire 90+ minute movie, complete with characters, and dialogue, and more than one scene. Ah, Hollywood.

#1 CROUCHING FREDDY, HIDDEN JASON

Considering how great Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was (especially within the context of when it was released), one would think that the long-talked-about sequel couldn't possibly be considered a "Rotten Idea." Well, that's until the hypothetical "one" hears that the director of the sequel will be Ronny Yu (Freddy Vs Jason, Bride of Chucky, Formula 51), and not, say, Ang Lee. Anyway, the sequel will be an adaptation of the fourth book in the Crane-Iron Pentalogy by Wang Du Lu known in English as Silver Vase, Iron Knight. The Weinstein Company will be distributing Silver Vase, Iron Knight in the USA (and producing the production in Asia when it starts filming this coming May). Silver Vase, Iron Knight continues the story of the character of Yu Shu Lien, played in the first film by Michelle Yeoh, although it is not yet known if she will be returning for the sequel.

Japanese Government Minister Tells Elderly To ?hurry Up And Die?

?Respect your elders? is a common adage, and one which many cultures around the world adhere to; honoring older people for their knowledge, wisdom and experience.

But in Japan, a country known for its honor of the elderly, a senior government minister is being criticized for recently telling seniors to ?hurry up and die.?

As reported in the Globe and Mail newspaper, Taro Aso, Japan?s newly-appointed minister of finance, expressed his opinion at a recent meeting on the topic of social security, where he said he was frustrated that ? according to his perception ? many Japanese seniors are content to retire off government funds.

?I would wake up feeling increasingly bad knowing that[my retirement] was all being paid for by the government,? the 72 year-old wealthy official was quoted by the newspaper as saying at the meeting.

In Japan, Aso?s comments are likely to offend millions of people in the country?s assisted living communities.

Japan has one of the world?s lowest fertility rates, with only an average of 1.39 children per woman, and the shortage of children has created a demographic imbalance with a disproportionately large number of seniors in the country.

And although the country?s population has experienced a slight decline since 2010, the proportion of seniors has jumped to nearly one-fourth of the overall population.

Girl killed in massive pileup on icy Ohio highway

CINCINNATI (Reuters) - A 12-year-old girl was killed on Monday and dozens of people injured in a 76-vehicle pileup on an icy Ohio highway, one of three major crashes that clogged roadways across the state, authorities said.

Sixty cars and 16 tractor trailers slammed into one another on Interstate 275 near Cincinnati just after 11:35 a.m., Hamilton County Sheriff's spokesman Jim Knapp said.

"Eighteen years on patrol, and I've never seen anything like it," he said.

At least 20 people were transported to local hospitals with undetermined injuries, said Colerain Township Fire Captain Darian Edwards, who described "dozens of walking wounded" being tended to at the crash site.

Authorities had originally identified the crash victim as a woman, but Colerain Township Police Chief Daniel P. Meloy confirmed that she was a 12-year-old girl. Authorities believe the girl, whose name was not released, had exited her car to investigate an initial crash and may have been struck by another car, Knapp said.

In a second crash Monday on Interstate 75, 50 cars collided, causing an undetermined number of injuries but no reports of fatalities, said Ohio State Police Lieutenant Steve Mahl. The crash took place in an area between Middletown and Monroe, in the southwestern part of the state

A third crash near Mansfield, in the north-central part of the state, caused a 13-car pileup on U.S. Highway 71, Mahl said, adding that only minor injuries had been reported in that crash.

All across Ohio on Monday, drivers have been contending with ice, periods of whiteout, and snow-covered and slippery roadways, said Mahl. "It's typical winter weather out here."

Florida court says all convicts must pay $20 fee

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -

An appellate court says every defendant convicted of a crime must pay a $20 fee to support Crime Stoppers programs.

The full 1st District Court of Appeal on Wednesday unanimously withdrew a prior decision by a three-judge of the same court that said the assessment applied only to defendants who are fined.

The new ruling noted that the law requiring the fee was revised on July 1, 2010, to change language that made the fee a surcharge to any fine imposed.

The 14 participating judges wrote that the cost is no longer an additional surcharge. One of the 15 judges did not take part in the decision.

Oil rises near $94 on China, US recovery hopes

BANGKOK (AP) ? Oil prices rose to near $94 on Monday, supported by signs of economic recovery in the U.S. and China.

Benchmark oil for February delivery was up 33 cents to $93.89 per barrel at late afternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract dropped 26 cents to finish at $93.56 a barrel in New York on Friday.

Gordon Kwan, head of energy research at Mirae Asset Securities Ltd. in Hong Kong, said oil prices were rising on signs that the fragile economic recoveries in the world's two biggest economies appeared to be gaining traction. The U.S. housing market has shown steady improvement, while China's trade growth rebounded strongly in December.

"China and the U.S. appear to be on a very solid track of economic recovery. This supports oil prices at much higher levels." He said that prices were also moving up because of increased energy consumption in China, which is enduring its coldest winter in nearly three decades.

"There is the possibility that West Texas Intermediate could reach $95 per barrel in the coming days and Brent could go to $115," Kwan said.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, was up 27 cents to $110.91 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline was almost unchanged at $2.755 a gallon.

? Heating oil rose 1.5 cents to $3.023 a gallon.

? Natural gas rose 3.8 cents to $3.365 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Tunisians take to streets two years after Ben Ali's fall

Tunis (Reuters) - Thousands of Tunisians protested against their Islamist-led government on Monday, exactly two years after President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's overthrow in a popular revolt that inspired others across the Arab world.

More than 8,000 secular demonstrators gathered outside the Interior Ministry in Tunis's Bourguiba Avenue, the same spot where mass protests forced veteran leader Ben Ali to accept his rule was over and flee the country on January 14, 2011.

Protesters filled the central boulevard, carrying banners that read "No fear, no horror, power belongs to the people" and "No to emerging dictatorship ... No to religious dictatorship".

The moderate Islamist Ennahda party won elections in October 2011, but has struggled to restore security and stability.

"Ennahda out, down with the (Muslim) Brotherhood Party," chanted the demonstrators, waving red and white Tunisian flags. "Where is the constitution? Where is democracy?"

Tunisians rose up against Ben Ali after street peddler Mohamed Bouazizi set fire to himself in despair at the confiscation of his fruit cart in the town of Sidi Bouzid.

Popular unrest then convulsed much of the Arab world, ousting or challenging entrenched rulers in Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain and Syria, which is still mired in a civil war that the United Nations says has cost more than 60,000 lives.

Insurance Company Lies About Your Medical Treatment | Workers ...

Michigan workers comp lawyer breaks down insurance company dishonesty about your right to medical treatment.

One of the most important benefits under workers comp is access to quality medical care. This allows you to recover faster and get back to work.

Unfortunately, insurance companies try to save money at your expense. Here are three lies insurance companies?will?tell you about your medical benefits.

Lie #1: You cannot switch doctors

The insurance company is allowed to pick your doctor for the first 28 days. You will most likely be sent to a company doctor or an industrial clinic. Our experience shows that you will receive substandard medical care and may not even be correctly diagnosed.

You can select your own doctor after 28 days. You need only provide the name and address of your selection.

Lie #2: Our doctor has the final say about your work restrictions

Insurance companies want you to treat with their doctors. This allows them to assert influence on your work restrictions. If you are released to work without restrictions, your entitlement to wage loss benefits ends.

The insurance company does not have the final say about work restrictions. You can always get a second opinion from your own doctor. If there is a dispute, it is up to the magistrate to decide what restrictions are appropriate and whether you are entitled to additional benefits.

Lie #3: Additional medical treatment is not allowed

Insurance companies routinely send claimants to independent medical evaluations. These doctors typically?say no additional?medical treatment is needed. The insurance company then closes the claim and refuses to pay any future medical.

You are entitled to unlimited medical treatment under workers comp. If it is reasonable and necessary, the insurance company must pay.

How to fight back against insurance company abuse

We frequently see insurance companies who ignore Michigan law and deny medical treatment. Don?t let the insurance company play games with your medical benefits.

Call(855) 221-COMP for a free consultation with one of our workers comp lawyers in Michigan. We will fight to make sure that you get all the medical treatment that you deserve.

healthfinder.gov - Health Highlights: Jan. 14, 2013

Here are some of the latest health and medical news developments, compiled by the editors of HealthDay:

George H.W. Bush Released From Hospital

After spending nearly two months in the hospital for treatment of a bronchitis-related cough and other health problems, former U.S. President George H.W. Bush was sent home Monday.

Bush, 88, was admitted to Methodist Hospital in Houston on Nov. 23. His stay there included a week in intensive care last month, the Associated Press reported.

"Mr. Bush has improved to the point that he will not need any special medication when he goes home, but he will continue physical therapy," Dr. Amy Mynderse, the internal medicine physician in charge of the former president's care, said in a statement released by Bush's spokesman Jim McGrath.

"I am deeply grateful for the wonderful doctors and nurses at Methodist who took such good care of me," Bush said in the statement, the AP reported.

Test Home for Radon Gas: EPA

Americans can reduce their risk of lung cancer by testing their homes for radon gas, the Environmental Protection Agency says.

"Testing for radon is one of the easiest and smartest things people can do to protect their homes and families from this serious health risk," Gina McCarthy, assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Air and Radiation, said Monday in an agency news release. "Addressing high radon levels greatly reduces exposure to the second leading cause of lung cancer."

Each year, 21,000 Americans die from radon-related lung cancer.

Radon gas occurs naturally from the decay of uranium in the soil and can accumulate to dangerous levels inside homes, schools, workplaces and other buildings. Exposure to elevated levels of the colorless, odorless gas is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.

As part of National Radon Action Month, the EPA says that all buildings with or without basements should be tested for radon. Affordable do-it-yourself radon test kits are available online and at home improvement and hardware stores. People can also hire qualified radon testers.

Action should be taken if radon levels are at or above 4 picoCurries per liter. Have the work done by a qualified radon-reduction contraction, the EPA says.

Obesity Issue Addressed in New Coca-Cola Ad

Coca-Cola will begin airing a two-minute television ad on Monday addressing the issue of obesity.

The ad by the world's leading beverage maker will appear during the highest rated shows on CNN, MSNBC and Fox News. It will note that weight gain is the result of consuming too many calories from all types of food and drink, not just soda, the Associated Press reported.

It will also highlight Coca-Cola's record of providing drinks with fewer calories.

The Atlanta-based company said the ad campaign is the first in a number of obesity-related initiatives over the next year, such as providing more diet choices at soda fountains, the AP reported.

Mike Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, questioned the motive behind Coca-Cola's ads, and said that if the company was serious about fighting obesity, it would stop fighting soda taxes, the AP reported.

"It looks like a page out of damage control 101," he said. "They're trying to disarm the public."

Lance Armstrong Will Admit Doping in Oprah Interview

Disgraced American cyclist Lance Armstrong will admit to doping in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that is scheduled to be taped Monday and shown Thursday on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

While he'll confess to doping, Armstrong will probably not go into detail about specific cases and events, a person with knowledge of the situation told USA Today.

For many years, Armstrong strongly denied allegations of doping. He often attacked accusers as liars and went to court to fight charges that he used performance-enhancing drugs and blood transfusions throughout his cycling career.

Late last year, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency released a report with a huge amount of evidence against Armstrong. He's since been stripped of his Tour de France titles, lost lucrative advertising contracts, and stepped down from Livestrong, the cancer charity he founded, USA Today reported.

President Obama Has Fitness Evaluation

President Barack Obama underwent a "routine fitness evaluation" Saturday at the Fit to Win Clinic at the Pentagon, according to the White House.

"The fitness evaluation is part of the periodic medical exam that is coordinated by the physician to the president," a White House official explained, CNN reported. "The results of the president's periodic medical exam will be released before the end of the month."

Obama's prior physical exam in October 2011 found the former smoker to be tobacco-free and eating a healthy diet.

"The president is in excellent health and 'fit for duty,'" Dr. Jeffrey Kulhman wrote at the time, CNN reported. "All clinical data indicate he will remain so for the duration of his presidency."

Male Jurors More Likely to Convict Obese Women: Study

A new study finds that male jurors are more likely to deliver a guilty verdict against obese women than for lean women, but don't have the same bias against obese men.

Yale University researchers asked 471 study participants to look at photos of four people -- an obese woman, a lean woman, an obese man, and a lean man -- and to rate their likelihood of being guilty of an imaginary check fraud crime, ABC News reported.

Men were much more likely to say they believed the obese woman was guilty than the lean woman. Women did not display this type of discrimination.

The findings were "disappointing but not entirely surprising," said lead researcher Natasha Schvey, ABC News reported. Men tend to judge women more harshly than men, and women tend to be more sympathetic, she suggested.

"I think it's one more nail in the coffin of how painful it is for people that are of larger sizes," Lynn Grefe, president and CEO of the National Eating Disorders Association, told ABC News. "These people could be healthy. We're judging people. We're making stereotypes. We did this with race years ago. We did it with religion."

A Brutal Gang Rape, and India's 'Purdah' Problem - Hyphen magazine

Originally published at Asia Society's Asia Blog

By Mira Kamdar

My first sense as a young girl of sexual menace came from my Indian grandfather. Let me be clear: He never even remotely sexually threatened or molested me. But he made sure I knew that the world in which I, a girl, was growing up was innately perilous to women.

Screaming reproaches at my dress or my uppity talk, he made it clear that the only way to protect myself from the ever-present danger of men was by conducting and dressing myself with impeccable modesty, by making myself as invisible as possible. He also made me understand that, in the way of a wolf pup, my survival in the world of the alpha male depended on avoiding eye contact or any other sign of a pretense to equal status.

My grandfather was a conservative patriarch who ruled over a household overflowing with women and children: My grandmother, my two then unmarried aunts, my uncle?s wife and their three children. Every one of these individuals literally jumped at his command, fearful of his quick and unpredictable temper. The fear he wanted me to feel ? the best way he knew to protect my vulnerable young female self ? was confused in my mind with the fear I felt of him, his temper, and his unchallengeable authority.

Arriving in Mumbai at age nine from California, I was innocent of the traditional joint-family protocol that reigned in my grandfather?s house. I remember being profoundly perplexed and faintly amused by the daily ballet that occurred between my grandfather and my aunt. A daughter-in-law who had come to live with her husband in the home where he lived with his parents, she was never to be in the same room as my grandfather. If my grandfather began moving out of his back room or arrived after his daily walk at the front door, someone in the family would hiss her a warning: ?He?s coming!? She would quickly cover her head with her sari and slither away as fast as she could. When there was some rare need for her to communicate with my grandfather, she would ask one of her sons who would ask my grandfather.

I understood from this a horrible revelation: My grandfather's obeisance to a rigidly traditional non-relationship between father-in-law and daughter-in-law came from a fear that familiarity would open the door to sexual attraction, or worse. This fear was not unfounded: India?s National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data for 2011 indicates 94.2 percent of rapists are known to their victim. My aunt?s invisibility and the modest dress and comportment I was supposed to adopt were designed to protect our virtue. In effect, we women were to maintain a kind of purdah. The word, of Persian origin, means ?curtain? and defines a state where women are concealed from the view of men. A woman exposed to male view was a woman, I learned, in danger.

It is clear in the wake of the brutal gang rape of a young paramedical student in Delhi on December 16 that a purdah mentality still dogs Indian society. A woman who can be seen is seen as a woman available for violation. Rapid modernization and urbanization in India have made women, especially young women, visible as never before. More and more women are seeking education and employment. They go out to school, to work and to socialize with friends. They, like the young woman who was gang raped in Delhi, go out to movies. Increasingly, they go out with men, and, increasingly, they, instead of their parents, choose their life partners.

The young woman who was attacked had come to Delhi from a small village where her enlightened parents had scrimped and saved to educate her. She was studying to become a physical therapist. She was making her own life on the new exciting terms offered by India?s changing society. While these opportunities have increased, they can?t meet the volume of raised aspirations. Competition for slots in the better schools and for jobs remains fierce. The competition for women is also fierce.

In India, girls are too often seen as temporary members of their families who will one day marry and join a new family. Male children are preferred, and sex-selective abortion, female infanticide and the sheer neglect of girls have made for a growing gender gap. Too many young men simmer with aspirations and desires that are simply not likely to be realized.

India?s purdah mentality permeates every level of Indian society, as remarks made after the gang rape by members of Delhi?s police force and political leaders make abundantly clear. Rapists and sexual assailants also know they are likely to get away with their crime: While the NCRB reported a 112 percent increase in reported rapes between 1990 and 2008, three-fourths of accused perpetrators remained in 2011 at large and only 26 percent were convicted in 2012. The vast majority of rapes and sexual assaults remain unreported: Victims fear reprisals, humiliating treatment on the part of the authorities and reputations indelibly stained.

In the wake of this brutal attack, Indian citizens have taken their outrage over their government?s failure to reform antiquated laws and a creepingly slow judicial system that abet rapists to the streets. The lid on India?s deep-seated culture of misogyny has been blown; the pretty curtain of the virtuous because modest Indian woman torn aside to reveal the hypocrisy of the country?s purdah mentality. If there is hope in grief and outrage, it is hope for real reform now of laws that fall far short of defining rape and sexual assault as crimes, but also of attitudes that blame the victim and excuse the perpetrator.

In this, Indian citizens who have demonstrated en masse in recent weeks have joined movements against government indifference and misogynistic attitudes that feed a culture of rape in even the world?s so-called advanced economies. The ?slutwalk? movement was launched in Toronto, Canada, in April 2011 after a policeman, sounding alarmingly like my Indian grandfather, remarked that women who dress like sluts shouldn?t be surprised if they are sexually attacked. The slutwalk march has been replicated across the United States and Europe, where rape rates remain high and convictions of rapists low.

I recently felt again the kind of fear of men I?d learned from my grandfather in Mumbai so many years ago. Coming out from a subway station in Brooklyn, New York, last month, I saw a sign taped to a nearby light pole warning women against a brutal serial rapist on the loose in the neighborhood. On the sign was a phone number women could call if they wanted a volunteer bicycle escort home. I looked around nervously, and hurried on my way, head down, hunched over a little. Don?t look at me, my body language said: I?m invisible.

Huskers Battle No. 8 Penn State Sunday in State College on ESPN2

The Nebraska women's basketball team concludes its two-game Big Ten road swing by traveling to University Park, Pa., to clash with No. 8 Penn State on Sunday, Jan. 13.

Tip-off between the Huskers (12-4, 2-1 Big Ten) and the Lady Lions (12-2, 2-0 Big Ten) is set for 1 p.m. (central) with live national television coverage by ESPN2. Beth Mowins and LaChina Robinson will be on the call, as Nebraska plays its third straight nationally televised game.

The Husker Sports Network will provide a live radio broadcast of the game with Matt Coatney and Jeff Griesch on the call, including flagships B107.3 FM in Lincoln and The Wolf 93.3 FM in Omaha. A free live audio stream will be available on Huskers.com.

Nebraska is coming off its most complete game of the season with its 67-38 win at Indiana on Thursday. The Huskers led 62-24 with seven minutes and were able to rest their starters extensively in the second half. Freshman Rachel Theriot played the best game of her young career with a career-high 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field against the Hoosiers. The 6-0 guard from Middleburg Heights, Ohio, added six assists while making her 10th straight start.

Sophomore guard Tear'a Laudermill matched her career high with 14 points while leading a suffocating Husker defense that held the Hoosiers to an opponent season-low 38 points.

Starting forwards Jordan Hooper and Emily Cady both added double-doubles for the Huskers, who dominated the glass, 50-27, at Indiana. Hooper (13.3 ppg, 10.3 rpg) and Cady (10.3 ppg, 12.0 rpg) are both averaging double-doubles for the Huskers in Big Ten play. Hooper, a first-team All-Big Ten pick, leads NU with 18.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.

Senior point guard Lindsey Moore has added 15.5 points and 5.6 assists while shooting better than 50 percent from the field. She leads Nebraska with 17.7 points per game in conference play.

Ottawa Homes and Condos: Ottawa Real Estate Market Update ...

Members of the Ottawa Real Estate Board sold 618 residential properties in December through the Board?s
Multiple Listing Service? system compared with 695 in December 2011, a decrease of 11.1 per cent.

The five-year average for December sales is 617. The total number of homes sold through the Board?s MLS? system in 2012 was 14,308, only a minor decrease from the 14,389 homes sold in 2011. However, resale home sales in 2012 were slightly above the fiveyear average of 14,274. The average sales price for 2012 was $351,792, an increase of 2.3 per cent over 2011.

?Looking back at the 2012 market, home sales in the first part of the year increased in comparison to the first half of 2011,? said new President of the Ottawa Real Estate Board, Tim Lee. ?However, with the introduction of tighter mortgage rules in July, and looming government layoffs, the market seemed to ?cool down? for the second half of 2012. Although the government has succeeded in its plan to ?cool down?
the market, Ottawa remains steady and balanced, devoid of large fluctuations in resale activity. We are truly fortunate to live and work in such a stable market area, and it seems buyers and sellers agree that Ottawa remains a great place to call home.?

December?s sales included 134 in the condominium property class, and 484 in the residential property class.
The condominium property class includes any property, regardless of style (i.e. detached, semi-detached,
apartment, stacked etc.), which is registered as a condominium, as well as properties which are co-operatives, life leases and timeshares. The residential property class includes all other residential properties.

The average sale price of residential properties, including condominiums, sold in December in the Ottawa
area was $336,591, an increase of 1.3 per cent over December 2011. The average sale price for a
condominium-class property was $258,498, a decrease of 1.5 per cent over December 2011.

The average sale price of a residential-class property was $358,211, an increase of 0.6 per cent over December 2011. The Board cautions that average sale price information can be useful in establishing trends over time but should not be used as an indicator that specific properties have increased or decreased in value.

The average sale price is calculated based on the total dollar volume of all properties sold.
